I think the theme is hope. I think this because she had to have hope that she would have a good life in America. She also had to have hope that she would learn English after not understanding it for a while and keep failing to do it. Also you have to have hope to make new friends after moving from Cuba to New York.

I think that the theme is to have hope because when Henry's family got takin away he had hope so he put him self in a box and mailed him self all the way to Philadelphia just so he could get to a place with no slavery at that time .
He had hope that someday he would find a way to make slavery stop and keep it from happening or get out of it and he finally found a place at that time that had no slavery and than after just a few years he finally found a place that has no slavery . And that place was Philadelphia.
He had hope that he would finally get to Philadelphia because he mailed himself in a box that was mailed and nailed on a ship he was not aloud to make a noise or move at all or somebody would find him and then he finally got there .
I think that this story teaches you and makes me think that you should have hope because when you hope about something than you are also hoping that that will happen
